Immerse yourself in a world of contemporary art with a visit to The Broad, a renowned museum in Los Angeles. Host to some of the world’s most notable art, travelers will be inspired by a rotation of captivating exhibitions, public programming, and a permanent collection of leading contemporary art pieces. So whether it’s your first time to The Broad or you’re an LA local in need of a creative staycation, we can’t wait to welcome you to Hotel Figueroa, where creativity expands past the attractions, and into our very own doors.
Founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, The Broad in LA came out of the Broads’ commitment to cultural innovation in the city. Crafted over the span of 50 years, Eli and Edythe Broad built their art collection slowly over time, “believing that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made.” Today, the collection encompasses over 2,000 works of art, featuring the craftsmanship of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, and more.
The legendary identity of this attraction is also known worldwide due to The Broad Art Foundation — a lending art library and foundation which commenced in 1984. To date, The Broad Art Foundation has loaned art more than 9,000 times, all across the globe. At the heart of the foundation is the vision to increase public access to the world of contemporary art.
Encapsulated within a 120,000-square-foot building, The Broad’s museum space covers two floors, offering inspiration at every corner. The iconic architecture is recognized all over the globe for its detailed, honeycomb-like facade, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler. The design currently portrays a “veil and vault,” concept, with the vault housing The Broad’s collection storage. Presently set to undergo an expansion of 55,000 square feet, the new features will represent an “unveiling” of sorts, meant to portray The Broad’s commitment to making art an accessible and open experience for all.
According to The Broad, more than 900,000 visitors come from around the world to visit the museum. The Broad’s exhibitions set a world-class stage for contemporary art, providing an in-depth look at longstanding pieces from celebrated artists and present-day creations from global artists.
The Andy Warhol installation features 26 works, including the legendary Liz [Early Colored Liz] (1963) — a silkscreened portrait of Elizabeth Taylor. On the same floor, you’ll find the Jean-Michel Basquiat installation, featuring culturally impactful works like Untitled (1981) and Beef Ribs Longhorn (1982).
Beyond the still-standing exhibitions, The Broad is also host to immersive installations like Infinity Mirrored Room — The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away by Yayoi Kusama. If you look up photos of The Broad, you may just come across this sparkling room, filled with lights all around. The blend between mirror-lined walls and LED lights within the room provides a sense of endless depth and “infinity” to viewers. Although free to view, this installation requires reservations in advance and can accommodate up to four people at once, for a maximum of one minute.
General admission to The Broad is free, with the exception of certain exhibitions or events. Although walk-ins are available on a daily basis, a timed ticket is recommended for entry. Museum tickets for The Broad can be reserved online, alongside special entry to exhibitions like the Infinity Mirror Rooms installation. After having explored the museum’s imaginative spaces, head next door to Otium — a contemporary restaurant serving New American cuisine and refreshing cocktails.
Parking at The Broad is available under the museum, at a rate of $17 for three hours with museum validation, and a flat rate of $17 after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. The maximum daily rate is $27.
