The Essential Guide to LACMA

There’s one cultural destination that equally lures the likes of discerning fashion editors and eager art students, and it’s one of many experiences that should not be missed while in Los Angeles.

Hotel Figueroa suggests allowing for a day at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), which is considered one of the most illuminating campuses for the arts with a vast collection of more than 135,000 objects that cast glimpses into 6,000 years of history. The museum was established in 1965, and after a transformative renovation in 2008 by architect Renzo Piano, LACMA has been deemed the largest art museum in the western United States, spread across 20 acres.

As part of your LACMA experience, Hotel Figueroa recommends visiting the following:

  • In the Ahmanson Building, view Pablo Picasso’s “Weeping Woman with Handkerchief.”
  • Stroll through the Directors Roundtable Garden to cast your eyes on Alexander Calder’s “Three Quintains.”
  • Grab a table at Ray’s & Stark Bar for globally inspired, California fare.
  • Opt for LACMA’s classic film program, Tuesday Matinees, with tickets at $2 for children and seniors and $4 for adults.
  • After sunset, walk along Wilshire Blvd. to visit “Urban Light,” a unifying installation by Chris Burden that encompasses 202 solar-powered, antique cast-iron street lights that were originally used throughout L.A. and beyond.

Upcoming at LACMA:
From February 17 – June 29, 2019, LACMA will present Charles White: A Retrospective. The exhibition will explore  approximately 100 drawings and prints along with lesser-known oil paintings.
