Erica Everage
Featuring a fully immersive art experience during her year-long residency, 2023 Featured Artist EricaEverage’s exhibition, In Her Image—launching March 2023 (and running through February 2024)—is an expression of primal feminine creative energy. Taking inspiration from the discourse of archaeomythology, many of the paintings in the exhibition are interpretations of little-known goddesses and symbols of feminine power, while others are entirely imagined icons and creatrixes. The series of nearly 20 pieces reimagines these bold figures as taliswomen, totems of unabashed feminine energy, presiding over a realm of existence that champions feminine embodiment, creativity, and empowerment. The hotel’s history as a safe haven for women is Everage’s foundation for exploring this theme with the goddesses that adorn the walls of the hotel’s Artist Alley representing guardians of the feminine and female self-determination.
Erica Everage is an L.A.-based contemporary painter with a background in theatre and dance. A native Angeleno, she was born in Los Angeles, CA to two interior designer parents, Krista and John Everage. She began drawing the nude figure religiously when she was just thirteen years old, and won a Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award in 2005 for her drawing. The Spotlight Award earned her an apprenticeship with the late sculptor Robert Graham, who taught her to sculpt. Erica has a BA in Theatre from Northwestern University and will hold an MFA in Fine Art from Otis College of Art and Design upon her graduation in May 2023.
Utilizing her passion for history, feminism, storytelling, and dance, Everage’s gestural paintings are a celebration of women’s bodies and power in which she resurrects overlooked or misunderstood ancient goddesses and obscure mythological characters. Taking inspiration from cave paintings, and prehistorical sculpture, Everage imaginatively travels back in time to a world before patriarchy and misogyny, where feminine deities were worshipped.
Selected works by Everage will be on public display in Hotel Figueroa’s Artist gallery through February 2024.
