Hotel Figueroa Q1 2019 Featured Artist – Shizu Saldamando

“I gravitate towards portraiture through painting as a means to reclaim agency and representation…throughout art history (or at least the western European version of it), people of color have had very little representation and when they have been represented, it has been through a colonial gaze. I try to represent my friends and family in a way that is familiar, relatable, and not sensationalized or steeped in extreme stereotypes or criticisms.”  – Shizu Saldamando

Shizu Saldamando was born and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her portraiture employs painting and drawing on canvas, wood, paper and cloth, and functions as homage, as well as documentation, of subcultures within and around the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Solo exhibitions include To Return, Charlie James Gallery; When You Sleep: A Survey of Shizu Saldamando, Vincent Price Art Museum; All Tomorrow’s Parties, Moore College of Art and Design; and Stay Gold, Space 47.  Shizu’s work has been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery, D.C., Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Japanese American National Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. Shizu Saldamando was among the artists selected to represent Los Angeles in an official collateral exhibition at the 56th la Biennale di Venezia, Biennale Arte 2015.

Shizu Saldamando is represented by Charlie James Gallery, Los Angeles. All works on display are available for purchase; please see our concierge desk for more information.

About Feminist Camp:

Like our flagship program, this mini camp will show feminism beyond theory. We’re bringing together a dynamic group of speakers who are incorporating feminist values into their work and everyday lives in a myriad of ways. Speakers come from a variety of fields, disciplines, and backgrounds. Our goal is to show participants what a feminist career might look like, highlight important voices, and provide an opportunity for attendees to network and collaborate with other feminist in the area. Proceeds will go to the Feminist Camp Scholarship Fund!

Entry of Knights in White Satin Theme Park

Entry of Knights in White Satin Theme Park

Take a virtual tour of exotic, forgotten, and just plain strange theme park rides from around the world.

Join Atlas Obscura for a POV screening of ride videos collected from parks around the world. You’ll see rides fashioned from actual construction equipment, like at Diggerland in Kent, England, a Moody Blues themed attraction from the short lived Hard Rock Park, and a larger than life, anatomically-correct walkthrough of a pregnant woman’s stomach in Mexico.

We’ll also explore classic and beloved rides that are no longer operational. Theme park enthusiast and Atlas Obscura Field Agent Adam Papagan will begin each video with a discussion of the ride’s design and inspiration. Adam is a tourism industry professional who also leads occasional Disneyland Secrets tours for Atlas Obscura. No height requirement to participate, but the event is 21+.
